Who Is God?

Because God is Creator, every person is morally responsible to Him.

Worldview is a term that refers to the foundational beliefs, attitudes, and practices that frame a persons (or a groups) approach to the most important issues in life. The question of God is the most important aspect in a worldview. Whether or not one believes in God determines the way he or she will approach all other aspects of his or her life. The Scriptures assume the existence of God and His sovereign power and authority over all things, and reveal His character and commandments as the foundation of morality. In this lesson we will find that God is revealed in creation, He is the judge of right and wrong, and He is personally involved with his creation.

Hebrews 11:6  But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.

GOD IS REVEALED IN CREATION

Genesis 1:1  In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.

1:2  And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.

…….The Bible never argues the existence of God, it never had to and still never does. The “fact” of God is beyond obvious that this world and life didn’t just “happen”. A Big Bang couldn’t cause such perfect chaos. Though the stars seem scattered and out of order, everything flows and orbits in perfection. If humans evolved from animals then why aren’t they still evolving today. Not one person has ever witnessed the theoretical basis of evolution, but we see the miraculous changes with perfect stability every time the sun appears and disappears. We are certain about the very next minute it will rise on the next morning. If you ever wonder if God is really real, go outside and pay closer attention!

Psalm 19:1  The heavens (moon, stars and planets seem at night) declare (make known) the glory of God; and the firmament (the sky; sun and clouds seen in the daytime) sheweth his handywork.

19:2  Day unto day uttereth speech, and night unto night sheweth knowledge.

…….The timing is so perfect it’s almost like they day and night are communicating with each other.

19:3  There is no speech nor language, where their voice is not heard.

…….But nothing is heard of the change, it just miraculously happens every single day without fail.

19:4  Their line is gone out through all the earth, and their words to the end of the world. In them hath he set a tabernacle for the sun,

…….Though there is not much noise about the changing of days and seasons, that in itself (the changes) are total proof that this life didn’t just happen! There was and still is a creator keeping it all together, and that is our God!

B. Creation Proclaims God’s Greatness

…….We are His creation. The trees are His creation. Judgement is His creation. Listen to how it all relates:

Psalm 139:7  Whither shall I go from thy spirit? or whither shall I flee from thy presence?

139:8  If I ascend up into heaven, thou art there: if I make my bed in hell, behold, thou art there.

139:9  If I take the wings of the morning, and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea;

139:10  Even there shall thy hand lead me, and thy right hand shall hold me.

…….Have you survived enough as a Christian to be able to testify that you didn’t totally fail and turn back to sin because you held on to the hand that never stopped reaching out?! I truly believe the writer is testifying of this here! He said, no matter what state I have ever found myself in, you have never left me! Even in the times I was warned not to entertain those thoughts, or found it obvious that I was walking into a fight that I shouldn’t be in; when the day was through He was still there! Though we are commanded to walk in righteousness and perfection, our failures will never prove that God does not exist! But God’s mercy, in seeing a dying sinner with all of their addictions come out of the pit of hell always proves, that He does exist! The closer you get to God, the closer you will want to be to Him! With that said; the less you mess up, the less you will want to mess up.

139:14  I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvellous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well.

…….The writer goes from pointing out his human failure to praising God for making him so wonderfully! Knowing the grace of God is knowing the existence of God.

…….Listen to Isaiah’s questions that show that what God has done cannot be taught by another being.

Isaiah 40:12  Who hath measured the waters in the hollow of his hand, and meted out heaven with the span, and comprehended the dust of the earth in a measure, and weighed the mountains in scales, and the hills in a balance?

40:13  Who hath directed the Spirit of the LORD, or being his counsellor hath taught him?

40:14  With whom took he counsel, and who instructed him, and taught him in the path of judgment, and taught him knowledge, and shewed to him the way of understanding?

Romans 1:18  For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness;

…….I have witnessed more times than I can count of the wrath of God on those who practice unrighteousness continuously. Though His mercy is great and beyond understanding, His wrath is still undeniable.

1:19  Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed it unto them.

1:20  For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse:

…….Because God has revealed to us so much about creation and salvation, no one has an excuse to not believe and live without salvation. He has provided for us through His Holy Spirit a way to escape temptation. He has taught us how to walk in His paths of righteousness, and to be able to know the elements that bring our weaknesses. Because of the mental and spiritual clarity of Him through the Spirit, we have no excuse to fall into utter disbelief and walk away.

JUDGE OF RIGHT AND WRONG

A. The Divine Law-Giver

Rom 2:12  For as many as have sinned without law shall also perish without law: and as many as have sinned in the law shall be judged by the law;

…….God is the Divine Law-Giver and rightful judge. To the Jew who sinned while having and knowing the law; and to the Gentile who sinned not knowing the law but having knowledge of right and wrong through the knowing of God, judgement is still inevitable.

Rom 2:13  (For not the hearers of the law are just before God, but the doers of the law shall be justified.

…….No matter how often we come to church and listen to the truth, if we aren’t abiding in truth we will be condemned.

Rom 2:14  For when the Gentiles, which have not the law, do by nature the things contained in the law, these, having not the law, are a law unto themselves:

Rom 2:15  Which shew the work of the law written in their hearts, their conscience also bearing witness, and their thoughts the mean while accusing or else excusing one another;)

…….No matter how much of this Word we understand, our spiritual conscience will let us know when we are wrong if we are listening. This is why every believer in every stage of life must abide (walk) in the Spirit. You may come to the point daily in your life that you don’t have an answer, but even then the Spirit will guide you in the right path.

Rom 2:16  In the day when God shall judge the secrets of men by Jesus Christ according to my gospel.

…….What a thought, that God is going to judge us by the things that no one else sees but us. The things that are in our minds and our greatest intentions will be revealed on that great day of judgement! For some that is scary, for the saved that is exciting!

B. Parting of Ways

Ephesians 4:17  This I say therefore, and testify in the Lord, that ye henceforth walk not as other Gentiles walk, in the vanity of their mind,

4:18  Having the understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God through the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart:

…….Have you ever met someone like that? They knew how to walk in the midst of the righteous but it seemed as though they were blind to so much of the truth? That’s a tough position to be in, wanting so badly to see the truth for them but know the only way for them to change is for them to want it for themselves. Stay humble!

4:19  Who being past (beyond) feeling have given themselves over unto lasciviousness (unrestrained lust), to work all uncleanness with greediness.

…….The consequence of habitual sinning results of a blind heart or a reprobate mind (mind without God).

4:20  But ye have not so learned Christ;

4:21  If so be that ye have heard him, and have been taught by him, as the truth is in Jesus:

4:22  That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts;

…….It has been preached for years to put off the old man, for what reason? Because he’s still going to rise up! We need to be reminded often that the flesh is trying to spin us out of control, and we must let the spirit do it’s work in us by keeping that old man in submission!

4:23  And be renewed in the spirit of your mind;

…….Sometimes we just need to refresh, that is the importance of participating in the move of the the Spirit.

4:24  And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness.

…….You want the answer on how to change? That’s it, “be renewed in the spirit” to the point that it changes your mind, and put on the new man that follows after the righteousness and holiness of God!

1Peter 1:13  Wherefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and hope to the end for the grace that is to be brought unto you at the revelation of Jesus Christ;

…….Where is your focus? Many of us believers today are becoming distracted by worldly circumstances and have become practically drunk by the worries of life. Our hope is not what we gain from this life but from what is to come in living with the Lord.

1:14  As obedient children, not fashioning yourselves according to the former lusts in your ignorance:

…….Don’t be fooled by the things that once had you bound.

1:15  But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation (behavior);

1:16  Because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy.

PERSONALLY INVOLVED CREATOR

A. Declaring the Unknown God

Acts 17:16  Now while Paul waited for them at Athens, his spirit was stirred in him, when he saw the city wholly given to idolatry.

17:17  Therefore disputed he in the synagogue with the Jews, and with the devout persons, and in the market daily with them that met with him.

17:18  Then certain philosophers of the Epicureans, and of the Stoicks, encountered him. And some said, What will this babbler say? other some, He seemeth to be a setter forth of strange gods: because he preached unto them Jesus, and the resurrection.

17:19  And they took him, and brought him unto Areopagus, saying, May we know what this new doctrine, whereof thou speakest, is?

17:20  For thou bringest certain strange things to our ears: we would know therefore what these things mean.

17:21  (For all the Athenians and strangers which were there spent their time in nothing else, but either to tell, or to hear some new thing.)

17:22  Then Paul stood in the midst of Mars’ hill, and said, Ye men of Athens, I perceive that in all things ye are too superstitious.

17:23  For as I passed by, and beheld your devotions, I found an altar with this inscription, TO THE UNKNOWN GOD. Whom therefore ye ignorantly worship, him declare I unto you.

17:24  God that made the world and all things therein, seeing that he is Lord of heaven and earth, dwelleth not in temples made with hands;

17:25  Neither is worshipped with men’s hands, as though he needed any thing, seeing he giveth to all life, and breath, and all things;

17:26  And hath made of one blood all nations of men for to dwell on all the face of the earth, and hath determined the times before appointed, and the bounds of their habitation;

17:27  That they should seek the Lord, if haply they might feel after him, and find him, though he be not far from every one of us:

17:28  For in him we live, and move, and have our being; as certain also of your own poets have said, For we are also his offspring.

17:29  Forasmuch then as we are the offspring of God, we ought not to think that the Godhead is like unto gold, or silver, or stone, graven by art and man’s device.

17:30  And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men every where to repent:

A17:31  Because he hath appointed a day, in the which he will judge the world in righteousness by that man whom he hath ordained; whereof he hath given assurance unto all men, in that he hath raised him from the dead.

17:32  And when they heard of the resurrection of the dead, some mocked: and others said, We will hear thee again of this matter.

17:33  So Paul departed from among them.

17:34  Howbeit certain men clave unto him, and believed: among the which was Dionysius the Areopagite, and a woman named Damaris, and others with them.

B. Believing in and Seeking God

Hebrews 11:6  But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.

…….The only God there is, is not unknown, for he has made himself known. God’s existence and nature are revealed through the world he created; he has made Himself known through the Holy Scriptures; and He has made Himself known preeminently through Jesus Christ. His voice calls us to worship him. God is a person and must be respected as such. We bow in worship to the God who is personally involved in the matters of this world and in our lives. We can know God personally by faith in Jesus Christ as our Savior and Lord, and when we know him thus, our character is transformed into a likeness to the righteous character of Christ in God.
