The Authority of Scripture

The Scriptures are inspired by God for our instruction and spiritual growth.

THE SCRIPTURE IS DIVINELY INSPIRED

A. God Breathed

2Ti 3:14  But continue thou in the things which thou hast learned and hast been assured of, knowing of whom thou hast learned them;

…….How does anyone with a talent get good at their specific trait? They practice it over and over until they are satisfied for that day. If we want to be a “good” Christian we must learn this Bible! Everything we need, every answer to all of our questions, every source of guidance, every word of encouragement is in this great book!

2Ti 3:15  And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.

…….There is a great importance for our children to learn Bible stories and be familiar with the scriptures. Scripture builds a foundation even in children that corrects them in their youngest temptations. I can’t tell you how many times I passed up temptation due to conviction be so deep in my soul. Why? Because someone introduced me to the truth!

2Ti 3:16  All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:

…….All scripture is inspired by God and bring profit. What kind of profit? You mean I will gain something? The kind of profit that keeps us parallel to His plan. This Word gives us direction!

……My mind goes to this scripture (Heb 4:12  For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.)

…….What a powerful word that tells us the exact use and work of Gods Holy Word! Sometimes this Bible is tough to digest we may say…..well guess what, He did it on purpose. It may not always be easy and sometimes it feels like it cuts like a knife, but it is always profitable!

2Ti 3:17  That the man of God may be perfect (complete, whole), throughly furnished unto all good works.

…….This is the whole purpose of scripture, that it may raise us up into a complete being, that we may look back in life at all stages and be able to say, God has brought me a very long way and it’s been amazing!!!

B. Carried Along By The Spirit

2Pe 1:16  For we have not followed cunningly devised fables (tales, fictional stories), when we made known unto you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but were eyewitnesses of his majesty.

…….The Disciple and great Apostle Peter encourages his readers in the fact that the scriptures that have been written are not made up stories, but were written by eyewitnesses of the ministry and glorious and magnificently mighty power!

2Pe 1:17  For he received from God the Father honour and glory, when there came such a voice to him from the excellent glory, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.

…….Peter reminds us of his presence when Jesus was glorified by God. This is the story in Matthew 3:16 And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him: 17 And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.

2Pe 1:18  And this voice which came from heaven we heard, when we were with him in the holy mount.

2Pe 1:19  We have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts:

2Pe 1:20  Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation.

…….We cannot take this scripture and twist it to suite our desires. The Word was spiritually written and must be spiritually understood. Not just anyone can read and understand these great scriptures. It is a blessing to understand not only how it impacts the mind, but also changes the heart!

2Pe 1:21  For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.

…….Paraphrase: Prophecy didn’t come by men who simply knew the world needed a change, it came by men who were completely in tune with God and were Full of His Spirit, and they obeyed to tell exactly what was placed in their hearts! It wasn’t manipulated by flesh, but it perfectly manipulates the flesh!

THE SCRIPTURE IS DIVINE REVELATION

A. Revelation Is for Everyone

There is something in this Psalm for everyone who will receive it. For those who see in the creation and nature evidences of God the creator who made the universe and all that is in it, this is confirmed by verses 1-6.

Psa 19:1  To the chief Musician, A Psalm of David. The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament (sky) sheweth his handywork……Anyone can testify to that! Even to those who claim they have no belief in God, they cannot deny any time they look up into the sky, that something is going on beyond human power and thought!

Psa 19:2  Day unto day uttereth speech, and night unto night sheweth knowledge.

Psa 19:3  There is no speech nor language, where their voice is not heard.

Psa 19:4  Their line is gone out through all the earth, and their words to the end of the world…….The writer is saying it is almost as the day and night are in continuous communication with each other, speaking when to come and go and it is so obvious to everyone who have sight of it!

Rest of vs. 5: In them hath he set a tabernacle for the sun,

Psa 19:5  Which is as a bridegroom coming out of his chamber, and rejoiceth as a strong man to run a race.

Psa 19:6  His going forth is from the end of the heaven, and his circuit unto the ends of it: and there is nothing hid from the heat thereof.

Psa 19:9  The fear of the LORD is clean, enduring for ever: the judgments of the LORD are true and righteous altogether.

Psa 19:10  More to be desired are they than gold, yea, than much fine gold: sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb.

Psa 19:11  Moreover by them (The Lord’s judgements) is thy servant warned: and in keeping of them there is great reward.

Psa 19:12  Who can understand his (mans) errors? cleanse thou me from secret faults.

…….There is no one like God who can understand our mistakes, and there is no one like God who can truly cleanse us from our faults. The mind of man will always have remembrance of mistake, but God has the power to forget even the greatest sins!

Psa 19:13  Keep back thy servant also from presumptuous (ignorant) sins; let them not have dominion over me: then shall I be upright, and I shall be innocent from the great transgression.

Psa 19:14  Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O LORD, my strength, and my redeemer.

B. Revelation Gives is Perspective

Psa 19:7  The law of the LORD is perfect, converting the soul: the testimony of the LORD is sure, making wise the simple.

…….His law converts our being. The word convert means to change direction back to the right way. As a person who is traveling and loses direction, and then gets in contact with someone that understands the road they are on and can lead them back. There is no feeling like being lost, and then there is no greater relief than finding the way back!

Psa 19:8  The statutes of the LORD are right, rejoicing the heart: the commandment of the LORD is pure, enlightening the eyes.

…….Before salvation, it was so easy to be turned away from Gods righteous laws. When we were living in darkness, His light was bitter, It revealed what was secret and at times it was humiliating. Now that we are converted by His grace we look to His law and hunger for change! This “enlightenment” is just as a light which shines in the darkness. It takes away the darkness (sin) and drives our desires far from it. The closer we stay to God, the farther away from sin we remain! Thank God for His enlightenment!

THE SCRIPTURE GIVES DIVINE DIRECTION

A. Direction Through Seasons of Life and Through Understanding The Word

Psa 119:105 Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.

…….When you feel like your path is growing dim, it is the word that leads us back to the light.

Psa 119:106  I have sworn, and I will perform it, that I will keep thy righteous judgments.

Psa 119:107  I am afflicted very much: quicken (revive, keep, recover, save) me, O LORD, according unto thy word.

…….When we are troubled by an means, it is our duty and Gods desire for Christians to offer prayers for rescue. The enemy desires for Christians to stay in the feeling of defeat and become depressed, it Gods desire is to restore and empower us through His Spirit.

Psa 119:108  Accept (receive), I beseech (pray and ask) thee, the freewill offerings of my mouth, O LORD, and teach me thy judgments.

Psa 119:109  My soul is continually in my hand: yet do I not forget thy law.

Psa 119:110  The wicked have laid a snare for me: yet I erred not from thy precepts (general rule to regulate behavior or thought).

…….Though the wicked set up traps to cause us to fail, whether flesh or spirit, his rule of guidance will show us the way though it seems dim.

Psa 119:111  Thy testimonies have I taken as an heritage (inheritance to be passed on) for ever: for they are the rejoicing of my heart.

Psa 119:112  I have inclined mine heart to perform thy statutes alway, even unto the end.

…….Our children and grandchildren will remember us by our lifestyles. If our life speaks the testimonies of God and we allow His power to work through us, we will be a guide to many long after we are gone!
