The greatness of God evokes our worship!

From the time of King David until the present, he has been regarded by the Jews as the greatest ruler of ancient Israel. As told in the Bible, David became the standard by which all other kings of Israel were judged. Considering the fact that David was a great warrior king, it is amazing that he was also the composer of 73 of the 150 psalms in the book of Psalms, and was called “the sweet psalmist of Israel” (2 Samuel 23:1). Psalm 145 is particularly interesting, in that David, the greatest king of Israel, proclaimed in this psalm, praises to the God of Israel as the king of the universe. David ruled Israel “under God and for God,” as was God’s will for him.

We must learn to trust in God’s provision! If there is one thing I’ve learned from serving the Lord it is this; He will take care of me and my own. There has never been a moment that the Lord hasn’t seen us through. No battle, no sorrow, and no oppression that He hasn’t flooded with comfort and assurance! And for this I give Him praise!

1. PROCLAIM THE LORD’S GREATNESS

A. Exalting Our King

Psa 145:1  David’s Psalm of praise. I will extol (lift up, exalt) thee, my God, O king; and I will bless thy name for ever and ever.

Psa 145:2  Every day will I bless thee; and I will praise thy name for ever and ever.

…….David once again opens this Psalm with praise to the Lord. He says in verse 1: I will bless thy name for ever and ever, that is throughout eternity. Just as David, I can’t think of one day that will go by that I can imagine not praising God! For everything the Lord has done for me, I will give Him praise!

Psa 145:3  Great is the LORD, and greatly to be praised; and his greatness is unsearchable.

…….David said the Lords greatness is unsearchable, meaning unable to be comprehended or fully understood. And just imagine, this God wants our attention.

B. Speak of God’s Works

Psa 145:4  One generation shall praise thy works to another, and shall declare thy mighty acts.

…….What a declaration of duty here, it is our job to pass on what God has done to others! When we give praise to God publicly we not only honor God, but we pass on to others what God has done for His people. This is one of the great importance’s of testifying. (2 Timothy 1:8  Be not thou therefore ashamed of the testimony of our Lord, nor of me his prisoner: but be thou partaker of the afflictions of the gospel according to the power of God)

Psa 145:5  I will speak of the glorious honour of thy majesty, and of thy wondrous works.

Psa 145:6  And men shall speak of the might of thy terrible acts: and I will declare thy greatness.

Psa 145:7  They shall abundantly utter the memory of thy great goodness, and shall sing of thy righteousness.

…….David declares it here and in verse 5 that he will testify of all the good things, but that there also will be some that see the wrath of God, (either in person or in vision) and they will testify of His “terrible” acts (His acts are always justified by His righteousness and His promises, He will not make Himself a liar). This is why it is important to take all ministers serious when they have a word from God. There are specific prophets whose ministry was to only see and preach of the wrath and judgement of God. I think personally that this is where much of the church has fallen short. We turn a deaf ear and blind eye to the preacher who can’t seem to tickle our ears, while hundreds of new converts fall away. The goodness of God brings us to salvation while the wrath of God keeps us, and at times it is reversed. The love of God will cause us to praise while the wrath of God will cause us to pray.

2. THE LORD IS GRACIOUS

A. Grace, Compassion, and Glory

Psa 145:8  The LORD is gracious, and full of compassion; slow to anger, and of great mercy.

…….The Lord is gracious, and the creator of Grace. This is why He can be so full of compassion and slow to anger with great mercy. Only the creator of Grace can understand it so perfectly. In the human mind, we tend to decide when grace should be cut off. Why? Because we don’t fully understand it. In the midst of being so forgiven, we tend to think that others don’t deserve forgiveness. But the truth is, none of us do. But He forgives us anyway.

Psa 145:9  The LORD is good to all: and his tender mercies are over all his works.

…….The Lord is good to “all”. (Matthew 5:45: for he makes His sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust.) All people receive the benefits of God’s providence. God by His providence, sustains the lives of all people, in that He “gives to all life, and breath, and all things” (Acts 17:25).

Psa 145:10  All thy works shall praise thee, O LORD; and thy saints shall bless thee.

Psa 145:11  They shall speak of the glory of thy kingdom, and talk of thy power;

Psa 145:12  To make known to the sons of men his mighty acts, and the glorious majesty of his kingdom.

…….Everything the Lord has created declares a praise unto Him, at many times without even making a noise!

B. Entirely Trustworthy

Psa 145:13  Thy kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and thy dominion (sovereignty, control) endureth throughout all generations.

Psa 145:14  The LORD upholdeth all that fall, and raiseth up all those that be bowed down.

…….Though all of creation fall, His focus as our Lord is always on redemption. If we could only fathom the thought that while we who praise Him are on His mind, the lost soul so far from any church is just as much on His mind. He never loses His focus on the purpose, and neither should we!

Psa 145:15  The eyes of all wait upon thee; and thou givest them their meat in due season.

Psa 145:16  Thou openest thine hand, and satisfiest the desire of every living thing.

…….The eyes of “all” wait upon Him and He provides every need! Whether we be whole or broken, when our eyes look for help, we come face-to-face with the loving God our King. He and only He can satisfy the desire of every living thing!

3. THE LORD IS FAITHFUL

A. Righteous and Near

Psa 145:17  The LORD is righteous in all his ways, and holy in all his works.

Psa 145:18  The LORD is nigh unto all them that call upon him, to all that call upon him in truth.

Psa 145:19  He will fulfil the desire of them that fear him: he also will hear their cry, and will save them.

…….This is the key, our petitions must be made known in truth. When we call on the Lord in need, He will provide to those who truthfully need. Many times in my life I have asked for things knowing the lack of need, and overlooked the things that were truly in need. It’s amazing to look back on all the things I thought I needed, and without asking, He has provided everything that I ever did need!

Psa 145:20  The LORD preserveth all them that love him: but all the wicked will he destroy.

B. Praise His Name

Psa 145:21  My mouth shall speak the praise of the LORD: and let all flesh bless his holy name for ever and ever.

…….David’s final words in this Psalm is to exhort and encourage “all” flesh to praise the name of the Lord forever!
